img_2270  Yesterday my wonderful husband made us pho for lunch. For those of you who are not familiar with pho, it is a vietnamese noodle soup, typically served with beef, though we had it with chicken Phil has been researching some pho recipes and came across this one

The best thing about this soup is it completely satisfies the craving for chicken noodle soup with a lot more flavor. The stock is simmered with ginger, star of anise (haha, anise) and cinnamon. But then the condiments are where it is really at: lime wedges, cilantro, basil, hoisin sauce, sriracha (thai red chili paste), and bean sprouts. Each person can add in various measures of each and every condiment and then proceeds to slurp down the piping hot soup.

One of the most pho-n things about sitting down to a lovely meal of pho is thinking up a pho-ew pho-tastic puns. Pho-nomenal!

I started the veggie garden today. Above are all my seeds planted in little cups in order to allow them to  sprout. This took way less time than I thought it would to plant all these. I did it in my kitchen this afternoon. I put them in the little nook off our kitchen because it get a lot of sun and it is pretty warm. The crazy thing is that there was a ton of snow on the ground all day!

img_2244   Here are the seeds that I planted today: tomatoes, peppers, lavender, marigolds. Hopefully the marigolds will help keep the bugs away from my tomatoes. Next weekend I will plant some more seeds and I will show you what I am up to and in a few weeks, I will finally get to start planting outside. Phil and I are currently working on plans for a raised planter bed for the back. More on that soon!

Hi there everyone!

I am going to try to grow a veggie garden this year. What do you all think? Any advice?

Thanks!

Sarah

Yes. That is right. The Rowlands have been huge blog slackers this month. I wish I could tell you our venture into slacker-dom is the result of the fact we have been doing so many fun and amazing things we have not even had the time to blog. And because the moth of October is one of the most beautiful in Colorado we just haven’t been at the computer long enough to blog.

That, however, is a big fat lie. Really, we have just been sick for most of the month so far. Lame! Sick does not equal fun.

I have to say that prior to the illness, we did have a great barbeque with Phil’s co-worker Kurt and his wife Jen and Lauren and Jeremy Meyer. Lauren put her teaching endorsement to good use and taught me how to make a pumpkin pie. It is easy and delicious!

Check out that beaut’! We had a lovely time chatting and eating on our porch.

And so do we! Today we spent the afternoon wandering around Granville Island in Vancouver. So apparently prior to 1979 Granville Island was just a place in False Creek where the port authority decided to dump extra sand dredged from the harbor. In that hallmark year, the artificial sandbar was made into an island. Now the island is home to a great public market, an entire art school, tons of galleries, restaurants and even a brewery (yay!).

At the public market, we found a whole host of delicious looking things to buy, including these pepperoni sticks. These are not the first pepperoni sticks we have encountered here in BC. They were all over the supermarket, at multiple stalls in the public market, anywhere you can buy food pretty much. And well, they were tasty.

Phil had a hard time getting everyone to look away from him at the same time in this photo.
