So, since sometime early in summer, May maybe, every evening Phil and I are home we have heard a strange sound on our back patio. It always totally freaks Meatball out. Rightfully so, he runs around like he is the house security guard. Tonight we finally had a sighting: it is a raccoon! Phil bravely checked out the backyard with a broom and flashlight. So thanks to my chihuahua and my husband, we are hopefully raccoon free — until tomorrow.
Ya know how annoying it is when your house is too clean? We finally could not take it any more. After endless hours of exhausting research we figured that a puppy would solve our problem. Here is our new crap factory and friend-to-Meatball. Her name is Smudge, and I am pleased to tell you that after only two days, she has stopped trying to nurse from Meatball. Though I don’t know if she ever figured out he is a boy.
Oh, and if you don’t respect chihuahuas–after the revolution, I don’t know if I can save you.

There are in fact, the dog days of summer. Case in point, Phil and I got Meatball a carrier so he can even take bike rides with Phil and I anytime we want.
Here are Meatball and I on our first ride together.
Meatball was a trooper. He made it the full four or so miles to Home Depot, seemed to love walking around there and did not bark once (yes!). Then we loaded him back up and headed home. Phil, thank you for being the photographer!

So Phil and I have this backyard porch that came with the house we bought in September and moved into in October. At first we thought, “Wow, that porch’ll be nice.” Friends and relations, it is not just nice. Our porch is totally sweet! I am currently writing to you from said porch after eating some fine cheese, drinking some delicious wine (7 Deadly Zins Old Vine Red Zinfindel), with husband and my dog. As of today, Phil and I actually have something to sit on too. We got some low-design and high comfort plastic adirondack chairs from Target. I highly recommend them. They really have facilitated my porch-sitting today and I look forward to continued porch-sitting in the near future. In just a short two weeks, it will be summer.

For those of you who don’t know him, this is our dog Meatball. He is the manliest chihuahua on the block. When we first drove into town here, Phil convinced some unknowing Lovelanders that he was an East German Shepard. “They breed ‘em small behind the Iron Curtain,” Phil assured the family.
After his first encounter with snow this winter, Meatball is frolicking around his newly fenced in backyard. He is eagerly awaiting the day he can take a bite out of a squirrel and is chasing birds left and right since they’ve returned with the spring.
